All of Me reveals the passion, intensity and simultaneous love and hatred inherent in family life. The show opens with the birth of the daughter: she is suspended in an aerial image subtly moving down to earth as the mother writhes in pain, attached to and counterweighting the baby. From here the narrative unfolds in sequences out of chronological order – the first monologue hints at the child’s death.
All of Me is set in 1950s Australia, with the parents struggling with their roles of stoic breadwinner and caregiver – reflecting both the social constraints of conventional gender roles, and the fear with which we approach such challenges.
First performed in 1993, All of Me has since toured Australia and internationally including New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, Sydney Opera House, Edinburgh Festival, Galway Arts Festival, Tollwood Festival Munich, Festival Ibero Americano de Theatro de Bogota and Shanghai International Arts Festival.
“Just extraordinary...a gravity defying spectacle that combines physical theatre skills with a rare emotional experience” The Guardian, 1996
All of Me won the 1995 Australian Victorian Green Room Award for Best Innovative New Form Production and the 1996 Edinburgh Herald Angel Award for the most outstanding theatre show across art forms, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
