Artistic Rationale

OUR STORIES ARE BORN OF THE ROUGH MAGIC CREATED WHEN DIFFERENT MEDIA HAVE TO FIND WAYS OF WORKING TOGETHER. THIS ENERGY IS GUIDED BY THE PRINCIPLES OF SUBTLETY, WIT, RIGOUR AND A DESIRE TO BE SURPRISED BY WHAT MAY EMERGE – FOR THE NEW TO ARISE, A SPACE FOR THE UNKNOWN NEEDS TO BE CREATED.

Our aim is as simple as it is bold. We want to create the theatre that inspires audiences to see the world anew. We believe that this theatre is borne at the intersection of space, vision, sound and the body. Out of the collision of the different languages which these elements generate, a new form of theatre emerges which is not bound or dominated by a single language but is liberated by its responsiveness to the possibilities of all of them.

We see theatre as a living space in which artists and audiences come together to discover new ways of telling stories and through these stories, new means to explore how they understand themselves and the world they live in.

Our theatre presents audiences with stories and images that will be both familiar and strange. It challenges them to reconsider how they understand their relationship to space and celebrates the diversity that is a fundamental part of contemporary society.

We challenge ourselves to imagine and present new forms of performance by bringing leading artists from the various fields of design, video and music/sound to come and work with our performers to interrogate the possibilities of ground and aerial performance.

Driven by the bold energy that is required to map out new territories, we are guided by an awareness that humility and respect are vital components of any creative process. Humility to know that the discovery of the new requires dedication, focus, clarity and hard work and respect for the audiences who will support us in our exploration.

We recognize that our aim to create the theatre of tomorrow can only be discovered through risk, expertise and an awareness that at the centre of our work is our relationship with our audience who, in their cultural diversity, constantly challenge us to produce work that extends our collective imagination.

With the resources of the Red Box and our other facilities in Lilyfield, we are in an excellent position to pursue this vision. Legs can be a laboratory for innovation and a hub for other practitioners as passionate as we are to explore the limits of performance. We have the space to develop new work and the potential to invite other artists to build their capacity by providing them with the means to challenge and rethink the work they create.
