JOEY RUIGROK VAN DER WERVEN

SET DESIGNER - MAN WITH THE IRON NECK

Joey is a Designer & Director for visual, physical, mostly out-door theatre. The worlds he creates are a mix of performance, structures, lights, sounds, machinery and sensory elements like water and fire. He writes with his designs.

Having worked for one of Europe’s large scale, out-door spectacle theatre companies as head technician and visual artist, and now working for 20 years in Australia as designer, writer and director on similar works, Joey makes and designs a style of theatre that can express real meaning and poetry through the animation of the “material” and interaction between characters and their environments.

In 2009 Joey received a 2-year Theatre Board Fellowship on self-devised image and spectacle performance making in Australia. He has designed and built for companies such as Stalker, Marrugeku, Urban Theatre Projects, Erth & Performance Space and his many independent works include Dream MasonsVolta, FireWaterThe 2012 Perth International Festival Garden and 2 of Woodford Folk Festival’s Fire Events; he designed The Finale for the Centenary of Canberra Celebrations; designer of Fruit Flies’ latest show Junk; and he was a designer/director for the ‘Opening Event’ of the 2016 national Regional Arts Conference, Artlands.

Based in northern NSW, Joey is currently developing regional touring spectacle Round-Up for the Northern Rivers and large-scale community spectacle Beachfor the Gold Coast, aimed for CG2018.
